The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has forecast heavy rainfall over parts of Niger, Kwara and other states from Friday, September 8, 2023.
On the same day, the three-day forecast released on Thursday, reveals there would be moderate to heavy rainfall over parts of Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Kaduna, Plateau, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Adamawa, Taraba, Cross River, Imo, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States.
Low to moderate rainfall is expected in some other places.
On Saturday, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Yobe, Benue, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara and Sokoto States.
The forecast also reveals that there are prospects of low to moderate rain over other places, while there is little or no risk of hydrometeorological hazard elsewhere.
However, for Sunday, there are slim prospects of moderate to heavy rainfall on Sunday over parts of Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Delta, Bayelsa and River States
Meanwhile low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Borno, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi, Plateau, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Oyo, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Cross River, Edo, Rivers and Imo State.
NiMet in the forecast said, ‘in the next three days, there are good chances of very strong winds to affect parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau and Kaduna States, while strong winds are anticipated over the rest of the country.’
The agency added that apart from flash flooding in some states, there could be isolated cases of uncomfortable temperatures, outbreaks of heat related diseases or isolated cases of heat stress in some places.
It advises Disaster Risk Management (DRM) authorities to be well informed about the development of the meteorological situation and raise awareness while it said the situation needs to be monitored closely with National Hydrological and Meteorological Services (NHMSs).
