By Sade Williams
The Federal Government has approved about N1.1 billion for the completion of the terminal building at the Kaduna Airport which started in 2012, James Odaudu, deputy director, press and public affairs, Ministry of Aviation has said.
He said the Federal Government gave the approval at the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.
According to the Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika while briefing State House newsmen after the FEC Meeting, “ the terminal building will be concluded and finished in due course. It has completion period of 6 months. The contractor will remain within the 6 months period or lower . The Contractor has accepted and the Council has approved.”
Giving the capability of Kaduna Airport in handling passengers during the closure of Abuja airport, Sirika said, “as Kaduna is, there are facilities that can be used, robust enough to take the passengers operations for the period of 6 Weeks. It will not hinder it and it will not also stop them from working.”
The minister also gave reasons on the proposed closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja runway.
“The entire structure of the runway has failed. The runway was designed for twenty years to cater for not more than 100, 000 passengers per annum. Today, it is doing over 5 million passengers per annum and it is there for 34 years. So it is going for 14 years in the excess of designed age. We are a government and very sensitive one for that matter. We would not just cause hardship or distortion to the economy for the sake of it.
