Even-though, the Akanu Ibiam International Airport is 90 percent ready, the Easter period previously promised  by Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika for reopening of the airport is no longer feasible due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sirika regretted that workers at the site have also left the site due to the pandemic ravaging the whole world.

The Minister, who was accompanied by the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Capt. Hamisu Rabiu Yadudu, to the airport noted that “92-93 percent of the work at the Enugu airport has been completed”.

According to him, “the work would have been completed in a few weeks time, but the workers left to be with their families in view of the social distancing protocol.

“But considering that the construction workers have downed tools owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government hereby officially announces suspension of procurement”.

He added that the remaining work at the airport will only require 15 days to be completed when the workers return to site.
