Four persons, suspected to be bandits have been arrested near the runway at Akure airport after the Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) who saw them from the Control Tower alerted  security operatives.

The bandits were said to have pursued farmers from their farmland into the runway and were seen by ATCs who in turn,  alerted Aviation Security, (AVSEC)  and Air Force personnel, who combed the nearby forest leading to the arrest of four of the bandits.

An ATC officer was quoted as saying , ‘this afternoon, bandits entered the airport runway as can be seen from the above video. The security of our staff is at stake sir . I ’m seeking the intervention of the Management and the Federal ministry to secure our staff’.

According to a situation report, it was said that a ‘woman and some young men were observed running from their farm behind the operational fence towards the edge of the runway shouting for help, they had noticed some men on motorcycles, apparently, they were being ambushed by men of the state police, Amotekun, they were eventually caught and taken away”

The ATCs noted that  earlier, ‘in response to a distress call that some suspected persons were seen behind the airport towards Eleyewo community, troops (AVSEC officers, NAF and the Nigerian Army) were in pursuit and one suspect was apprehended by joint security operatives, suspect has been taken to Nigeria Police Force area command for further interrogation.

” We have alerted the CP, the Brig. General of the army cantonment, the MAC and their men are all involved in collaboration with AVSEC .The joint operation was successful as four suspects were apprehended and they have been handed over to the police”

Responding , Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) , Olubunmii Kuku said the ministry of Aviation has accelerated the establishment of operational and perimeter fences at Nigeria ‘s Airports
