The Nigerian Meteorological Agency is a parastatal under the Aviation arm of the Federal Ministry of Transportation with the statutory responsibility of providing meteorological services for all sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Part of the Agency’s functions are; to collect, process data and issue weather forecasts and give early warning for the safety operation of aircraft, ocean going vessels, national food production, drought, desertification, disaster and relief management among others.

Meteorological Services in Nigeria started in 1892 within the premises of the then Public Works Department (PWD), Lagos, where the oldest rainfall station was established and became one of the constituent services of the British West African Meteorological Services of the then Gold coast, the Gambia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria in 1937.

In April 1949, the service became a full-fledged Department and was one of the seven Colonial Departments’ structure used in running this country. With the introduction of the Ministerial form of Government in 1952, the Meteorological Department moved from one Ministry to another due to the fact that the Meteorological Service affects all aspects of our economy.
